The new Police Commissioner could be greatly assisted by a boost in the JCF’s crime-fighting budget.

Co-Chair of the Economic Programme Oversight Committee, EPOC, Richard Byles, says the committee will be holding discussions with Finance Minister, Dr. Peter Phillips, with a view to increasing the government’s allocation for crime-fighting.

Mr. Byles says the National security Minister has indicated that additional resources totaling approximately 2-billion dollars, will be required to strengthen the fight against crime.

Mr. Byles made the announcement this morning while speaking at EPOC’s monthly press briefing in New Kingston.

Mr. Byles says this decision follows a presentation by the Security Minister, Peter Bunting, to EPOC.

Mr. Byles says the latest Global Competitiveness Index report showed that crime was a major impediment to growth.
