Minister of Culture, Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange, says a motion to outline the steps to transforming Jamaica into a republic will be discussed in the Parliament soon.

She told the House of Representatives yesterday that the government considers the matter of great importance.

The minister was answering a question from South St. Catherine MP Fitz Jackson, who noted the republic status achieved by the Caribbean territory of Barbados on Monday.

Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as Barbados’s Head of State – ending 394 years of indirect British monarchial rule.

During the ceremony, the Royal Standard flag representing the queen was lowered and Dame Sandra was sworn in as President.

Mr. Jackson noted that a resolution on the matter has languished in Parliament since last year.

The South St. Catherine MP says the failure of Jamaica to achieve republic status after lengthy deliberations is depressing.
