As severe drought conditions continue to grip the island, the Member of Parliament for South West St. Elizabeth, the PNP’s Hugh Buchanan, is this afternoon appealing for emergency assistance for thousands of farmers in the bread basket parish.
Mr. Buchanan says approximately 75-percent of his constituents are dependent on agriculture for a living.
He says the farmers are suffering.
Mr. Buchanan is calling for special consideration for the farmers in the parish.
He notes that St. Elizabeth is a crucial part of the agriculture sector, with growth in that sector often leading to an expansion in GDP.
The first term MP says it will take an inter-ministerial effort to deal with the intensifying drought situation that’s affecting farmers in his constituency.
He says he’s been in touch with Water Minister, Robert Pickersgill and State Minister, Ian Hayles.
