The 65-year old former NCU lecturer Russell McLean, who was extradited to the United States last week is alleged to have lived a double life as a serial rapist.

McClean will face a slew of sexual assault charges in Broward County, Florida.

The mild mannered lecturer often led prayer services before his classes, and led an otherwise respectable, professional life.

He’s being accused by US law enforcement of also secretly leading the life of a serial rapist.

Robian Williams has been tracking the story and files this report:

McLean has been a lecturer at the Mandeville-based Northern Caribbean University (NCU) for 18-and-a-half years. He was based in the College of Humanities, Behavioural and Social Sciences at the private Seventh-Day Adventist-run university.

He waived his right to an extradition hearing when he appeared in court in May.

The 65-year-old McLean was located while serving as a faculty member at NCU and arrested with the assistance of U.S. Marshals in the long running cold case.

Before fleeing Margate, McLean lived at a particular address from 1991 through 1997 and when a new owner moved into the home in 2001, he found several guns and jewellery in the attic, which police records show traced back to the crime scenes in two of McLean’s sexual battery cases.

Police said all of McLean’s Margate sexual assault victims lived in his neighbourhood.

From 1991 through 1997, McLean was employed by Nova Southeastern University as a community coordinator for their satellite office in Lauderdale Lakes.

Police said the office was a counselling centre and part of the university’s psychology department.

At the centre, patients would be counselled for depression and traumatic events.

According to the arrest affidavits, McLean’s place of employment is relevant because after the two Margate victims were sexually battered, McLean told them, ‘I know this is traumatizing and going to affect you long term. Do you guys want me to leave you money for counselling?”.

However, police never ceased their search for the Margate and Tamarac rapist, and records show they eventually collected DNA from McLean’s sister in the U.S. and performed a familial comparison with the DNA left behind at each of the rape scenes.

Police said the tests revealed McLean as the culprit in the unsolved attacks.

He is being held without bond at the Broward Main Jail.
