Chairman of the North East Regional Health Authority, NERHA, and well known Jamaica Labour Party, JLP political organizer, Tyrone Robinson, has died.
He was 58 years old.
Mr. Robinson died at 11:30 last night in Miami in the United States where he was receiving treatment.
He was being treated for severe complications which he developed after he contracted COVID-19.
According to Mr. Robinson’s family, he contracted the virus from someone who was asymptomatic.
Mr. Robinson was on a ventilator and had been in critical condition for several weeks.
For almost two decades, Mr. Robinson served as Fundraising Chairman for the North East, St. Ann constituency where the late Shahine Robinson – no family relation – was Member of Parliament between 2001 and 2020.
He was one of Mrs. Robinson’s main political organizers and a close associate of several prominent members of the governing party.
When Mrs. Robinson died last year, Mr. Robinson was spoken of in print media and political circles as a possible successor to her as the JLP candidate in North East, St. Ann.
However, Attorney-at-Law, Marsha Smith, was given the nod and went on to retain the seat for the JLP in the September 3, 2020 General Election.
Mr. Robinson was also one of the JLP’s divisional political organizers in the high profile 2019 East Portland by-election where Annmarie Vaz defeated Damion Crawford.
In 2013, he supported current JLP Leader, Andrew Holness’ bid to hold on to the leadership of the party following an internal challenge.
Mr. Robinson’s death has plunged the JLP top brass and sections of the business community on the north coast into mourning.
He was a trained pilot who also operated a construction business. He was involved in mining and farming.
Mr. Robinson was born in Heywood, St. Mary.
