Police Commissioner, Dr. Carl Williams, says there’s no need to fear the proposed DNA legislation.

The Parliament is considering a bill that proposes to empower to Police to obtain compulsory samples from criminal suspects and provides for the establishment of a DNA database.

Some lawyers have expressed concern about the compulsory taking of samples and fear that it could be abused.

But Commissioner Williams says the taking of DNA samples is similar to the taking of finger prints.

Commissioner Williams believes the DNA legislation will enhance the criminal justice system.
