The Organisation of Commonwealth Caribbean Bar Associations is congratulating St Lucia for adopting the Trinidad-based Caribbean Court of Justice, CCJ, as its final appellate court.
In a media release, the Association praised St. Lucia, which now joins other Caribbean jurisdictions, namely Barbados, Belize, Dominica and Guyana to become the fifth (5th) CARICOM state to become a full member of the CCJ.
The St Lucia Parliament gave the green light for the island to have the CCJ, replacing the London-based Privy Council, last week
The Association says it supports the CCJ as the final appellate court for all CARICOM countries, even those that have yet to adopt it.
It notes that they have already paid for the Court, which is comprised of sound and competent judges and provides access to justice which the current system does not easily do, among other reasons.
The association is urging the various Bar Associations to play an active role in this important exercise and to lend their voice, experience and guidance aimed at achieving this objective.
