The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is fully endorsing the government’s announcement that it will offer security assistance to Haiti as part of a larger multinational intervention.

Haiti has been in a deep political, economic and social crisis for months.

Armed gangs control large parts of the country leaving citizens and foreign nationals in fear.

Speaking in the House of Representative on Tuesday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the government is willing to send assistance to Haiti as part of a larger multinational intervention.

In the meantime, Caribbean Correspondent at the Miami Herald, Jacqueline Charles says the situation in Haiti has implications for Jamaica and other Caribbean countries.

Haiti has no functioning military and its Police is ill-equipped.

About 78 policemen have been killed since July last year.

Fourteen of those deaths were recorded in January this year.
