The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP, is calling on the Office of Utilities Regulations, OUR, to put on hold, the planned increase in electricity bills which took effect on September one.
Yesterday the OUR announced it had granted the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, approval for a 1.4 percent increase for residential customers.
The OUR says the JPS sought an average increase of 3.4 percent but the regulator approved an overall average increase of 1.4 percent.
Opposition Spokesman on Energy Phillip Paulwell says the move is unconscionable.
The Opposition Spokesman says he’s aware the existing JPS license provides for periodic rate reviews by the OUR.
But he says increases are not automatic, and applications must be subject to rigorous examination.
