The Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, Representative to Jamaica, Dr. Bernadette Theodore-Gandi, says unhealthy eating patterns are causing a rise in Covid-19 related deaths across the Caribbean.
According to Dr. Theodore-Gandi, the impact of covid-19 on persons who have non-communicable diseases across the region should not be overlooked.
Speaking at a Heart Foundation of Jamaica media conference today, Dr. Theodore-Gandi said people with illnesses like diabetes and hypertension are at higher risk of dying from the coronavirus.
She explained that now is the time to promote healthy eating to help to reduce deaths from covid-19 among people who have non-communicable diseases.
Dr. Theodore-Gandi also noted that people with comorbidities have been isolating throughout the pandemic, which has affected other sectors.
Dr. Theodore-Gandi is calling for the use of more warning signs, especially on the front of packaged goods to aid in promoting healthy eating.
