Prime Minister Andrew Holness is scheduled to address the nation at 6:30 this evening on a raft of new anti-Covid-19 measures.
The current measures are set to expire on Tuesday.
Several senior executives of the Ministry of Health reportedly briefed the Cabinet on Monday afternoon on the rapid increase in Covid-19 infections across the country.
The Prime Minister’s address comes as the country continues to record daily positivity rates of more than 30-percent.
Today’s positivity rate stands at 30.3%.
All major hospitals, except the Kingston Public Hospital, have exceeded their Covid-19 bed capacity.
Yesterday, the Health Ministry summoned doctors back from leave as several public health facilities were showing serious signs of strain.
The Prime Minister’s briefing also comes at a time when many are questioning whether there was sufficient enforcement of Covid-19 protocols at a series of major parties held last weekend.
Several videos emerged at the weekend showing crowded events with patrons ignoring the protocols.
With three weeks to go before the scheduled resumption of face to face classes, it’s widely expected that the Prime Minister will announce tighter restrictions to slow the third wave of the virus.
