PNP Denounce Squatting Despite Maintaining Opposition Of Bernard Lodge Demolitions

Opposition Spokesperson on Land, Environment and Climate Change, Senator Sophia Frazer Binns, says the People’s National Party is against squatting.

She made the declaration while defending the party from accusations that it has given tacit approval to the illegal occupation of land in Clifton, Bernard Lodge, St. Catherine.

The PNP has characterised the demolition of the illegal structures as a violation of human rights.

Mrs. Frazer Binns says the PNP believes the issue in Clifton cannot be considered squatting.

The Opposition Spokesperson says despite the party’s intolerance of squatting, it believes the government has a responsibility to address historical issues of landlessness in the country.

Estimates indicate up to 600-thousand Jamaicans may currently be illegally occupying lands in the country.

Mrs. Frazer Binns says targeted policies are needed to address the issue.
