The Opposition People’s National Party, the PNP is criticizing the Government for what it says are moves being made to make fundamental changes to the existing electoral structures in St Catherine.

In a statement today, the PNP said yesterday evening the Leader of Opposition Business in the House, Phillip Paulwell, received notice of a Bill to be tabled and debated today in Parliament.

The bill is intended to separate the Portmore Municipality from the St Catherine Municipality.

According to the PNP, the move would prevent Councilors who sit on the Portmore Municipality from sitting on the St Catherine Municipality.

This despite Portmore being part of the geography of St Catherine.

The PNP says it’s very disturbed that fundamental changes to the electoral process are being proposed at the last minute.

The party says the proposed change is even more disturbing given that it’s being made without consultation and engagement with the citizens to be impacted.
