A member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force was shot and killed in a confrontation with a gunman in St Ann on Monday evening.

A manhunt is underway for the man believed to have killed the policeman.

Dead is Constable Ricardo Fairclough.

Reports are shortly before 9 Monday evening, Constable Fairclough was at a supermarket in the parish when he observed a robbery in progress. It’s understood that during the robbery the gunman opened fire and hit another person.

Constable Fairclough reportedly went to the assistance of the injured person, and engaged the gunman in a shootout.

However, it’s understood Constable Fairclough was hit in the upper body. The policeman was taken to hospital where he died while being treated.

The Jamaica Police Federation has confirmed Constable Fairclough’s death. In a message to their members, the central committee of the police federation expresses sadness at the constable’s killing.

“It is indeed a very sad moment for the Jamaica Constabulary Force family. We are numb with pain at our colleagues’ demise,” said the Federation.
