A police constable remains in hospital after being shot and injured by gunmen, when he foiled a robbery in St Catherine last night.

The constable is attached to the Constabulary’s Protective Services in the Corporate Area.

Reports from the Constabulary’s Corporate Communications Unit, are that the incident happened at about 9 Friday night.

A police team was driving in the vicinity of White Water Meadows on Old Harbour Road, when they were alerted to persons aboard a Coaster bus being robbed by gunmen.

The police intervened and foiled the robbery.

The armed men engaged the police in a gun battle, and one of the Constables was shot and injured. The gunmen fled on foot.

The policeman sustained an injury to the leg and is being treated in hospital.

The CCU says his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.

It’s understood that one of the suspects is also being treated in hospital and is under Police guard.
