Police are intensifying their investigation into the killing of Corporal Melvin Smith in Mandeville, Manchester on Saturday.

The 38- year old policeman was shot dead at about 8 p.m. on Manchester Road, Manchester while helping a citizen who was being robbed of his motorcycle.

The robbery victim was also shot and injured during the attack. He remains hospitalized in stable condition.

Corporal Smith was assigned to the Manchester Community Safety and Security Branch.

Police Commissioner, George Quallo, condemned the killing in a statement over the weekend. He says an attack on any law enforcement officer is an attack on the very foundation of the security of the nation.

Commissioner Quallo has extended his condolences to Smith’s family and the Manchester police.

The Independent Commission Investigations, INDECOM also condemned the killing.

In a statement on Saturday INDECOM Commissioner, Terrence Williams, called for the unconditional cooperation of all citizens in the fight against criminal elements in the society.
