The Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ) is supporting a call made by Professor Anthony Harriott for the separation of MOCA from the Constabulary Force.

A bill is currently before parliament which proposes to separate MOCA from the JCF. Professor Harriott is Head of the Police Civilian Oversight Authority, PCOA. He’s quoted in the Gleaner newspaper today as calling for the separation to be fast-tracked.

In a statement today, the PSOJ says Professor Harriott’s argument is based on the correct observation that there’s too much structurally wrong with the JCF.

The PSOJ says it believes Professor Harriott’s call is also based on a lack of accountability and effective management within the JCF.

According to the PSOJ, it would have hoped that more of these calls would have been made years ago when it was obvious that Jamaica was heading to the level of lawlessness that permeates the society.

The PSOJ says it’s encouraging other stakeholder groups to support the call made by Professor Harriott.

According to the private sector group, as a country, Jamaica cannot afford to have the responsible authorities remain silent on crucial issues which they have responsibility for.

The PSOJ says it, therefore, commends Professor Harriott for his honest statement and call for better accountability from law enforcement.
