Jill Stewart, the wife of hotel mogul and Chairman of Sandals, Adam Stewart, has died after a year long battle with cancer.
Mr. Stewart announced her passing in a social media post on Saturday.
The Stewarts met when they were 15-year-old students at boarding school in Boca Raton, Florida, in the United States.
William Mitchell reports.
Jill Stewart was born in the Bahamas, but she’s called Jamaica her home for almost 18 years.
The Stewarts were high school sweethearts. They bonded over their love of travelling and shared English roots.
Jill wasn’t much for public life. She preferred to focus on her family and her passion for running. She turned that passion into a business as a fitness instructor and a community of runners in Montego Bay.
Speaking with the CEO and Founder of JOZU For Women, Stephenie Rodriguez, six years ago, Mrs Stewart beamed about her passion, her family and her community.
Mrs Stewart was diagnosed with sarcoma in 2022. She lost the fight on Friday. She was 42-years-old.
In making the announcement, her husband said he was heart broken and overcome with grief. He described Jill as the love of his life and his best friend.
Despite her aversion to public life, the Stewarts have been open on social media about Jill’s fight with cancer.
Adam Stewart says his late wife was brave and generous in sharing her journey so she could help support others with cancer and raise awareness for prevention.
Mr Stewart said Jill was deeply touched by the support and comforting words she received.
In reacting to the news, Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed his sadness at Mrs Stewart’s passing, describing it as a devastating blow.
Mr Stewart says his family was shattered following his wife’s passing, but he may take comfort from her own words:
