The Kremlin plays down hopes of a breakthrough following talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegates in Istanbul yesterday.
Spokesman Dmitry Peskov says there was nothing very promising said or any breakthroughs achieved.
Russia said on Tuesday it would pull back forces from Kyiv and another city, Chernihiv.
Western officials say this reflects failures to gain ground in many areas.
But the governor of Chernihiv region says there was no let-up in strikes overnight.
And Ukrainian officials say Russia is shelling nearly all cities on the front line in the eastern Donetsk region.
Heavy fighting has been occurring on both sides there since the start of the war.
In Mariupol, where thousands of civilians have been killed, Russia is close to taking the city completely, analysts say.
