Government Senator Matthew Samuda is welcoming the announcement of a plan to plant three million trees across Jamaica over the next three years.
The National Tree Planting Programme was launched recently by Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
The initiative is being managed by the Forestry Department.
Samuda says the tree planting initiative is one of several key initiatives being pursued by the Government as it moves to pursue sustainable development while at the same time, protecting the environment.
Senator Samuda says the importance of the tree planting initiative is not to be underestimated.
Samuda was opening the State of the Nation Debate in the Upper House of Parliament on Friday.
