King’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson says every accused citizen has the right to representation in court.
Tavares Finson is representing the man accused of murdering retired journalist Barbara Gayle.
24-year-old Travis Ellis is charged with murder and robbery with aggravation.
Ms. Gayle was found dead at her Caymanas Estate home on December 17.
Speaking with Nationwide News on Friday, Tavares-Finson says Ms. Gayle would’ve understood and appreciated the right to legal representation for every citizen.
Ellis made his first court appearance on Friday in the Supreme Court in downtown Kingston.
Tavares-Finson says Ellis is to undergo a psychiatric evaluation ahead of his return to court on May 26.

Ms. Gayle had been bludgeoned and stabbed to death.
Ellis stole Ms. Gayle’s vehicle, a GLA Mercedes Benz, which was discovered along Dyke Road in Portmore, St. Catherine.
He was taken into custody after the police found him hiding in bushes.
