The taxi man from Clarendon charged in connection with the September 8 abduction and rape of a 10-year-old girl in Mineral Heights, May Pen in the parish, was remanded when he made his first court appearance on Thursday.

He is 37-year-old Damion Beckford, a resident of Canaan Heights in May Pen. Beckford was charged with the offences on Monday.

He was remanded until Monday, October 26, to return to the May Pen Parish Court when the matter is expected to be heard in camera.

Police reports are that on September 8, the primary school student disembarked a taxi at the entrance of the Mineral Heights Housing Scheme on her way to school. It’s reported that a man persuaded her to get inside his vehicle.

Police say the child was taken to a neighbouring community, where she was sexually assaulted. She was released in the vicinity of her school.

The school’s staff was alerted, and the child was rushed to hospital, and the police called in.
