Trinidad Cement Limited, TCL, says it will send home 70-percent of workers at its Barbados based subsidiary, Arawak Cement Company.

The move means 123 of the 175 employees at Arawak Cement have lost their jobs.

Arawak will continue to supply cement to the Barbados market but that cement will now be produced in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

In August last year, TCL announced a plan to expand the production capacity in Jamaica at the Rockfort based Carib Cement Company by 30 percent.

That expansion, which is set for completion by the second half of 2024, is set to cost US $40 million.
