Lecturer in the Department of Economics at the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, Dr Andre Haughton, says while tourism is the main foreign exchange earner for the country, Jamaicans who work in the sector are struggling.

The World Bank says the Jamaican economy should grow by 2.1-percent this calendar year, with tourism expected to be one of the main drivers of growth.

Dr. Haughton says growth in tourism investment will not necessarily translate into benefits for the real economy.

Dr. Haughton says Jamaica’s tourism packages need to be tailored to contribute to growth in the real sense.

He says those Jamaicans who work in the tourism sector are having to toil long hours for meagre incomes.
