US Ambassador to Jamaica, Luis Moreno, says the island can become the growth engine of the Caribbean.

He says the United States fully supports the economic reform programme, and hopes to see a doubling of trade between the two countries in the next few years.

Ambassador Moreno was speaking at the American Chamber of Commerce of Jamaica’s installation of its new president, Ronald McKay, in Stoney Hill yesterday evening.

In one of his first major presentations since assuming office, Ambassador Moreno praised Jamaica’s performance under the current IMF Agreement.

He says Jamaica has the potential to drive growth within the Caribbean.

The US Ambassador congratulated Jamaica for its achievement of an improved business environment, noting that several sectors in the country are ripe for investment.

He’s also calling for the reduction or removal of both tariff and non-tariff barriers to US goods entering Jamaica.

And, Ambassador Moreno also urged the government to ensure the rights and freedoms of all Jamaicans are secured.
