US Representative for Minnesota’s fifth congressional district, Democrat Ilhan Omar, narrowly survived a primary challenge from Jamaican born, Councilman Don Samuels.

Omar, who is running for a third term, secured just over 50% of the vote to Samuels’ 48%.

A little over 1% of the votes were secured by the three remaining primary challengers.

A naturalised American Citizen Samuels migrated to the United States at the age of 21.

The third of ten children he was born to a Pentecostal minister and a seamstress.

Among his siblings are prominent attorneys, Jacqueline Samuels-Brown and Bert Samuels.

Speaking with Nationwide News Mr. Samuel’s says he’s proud of his brother’s accomplishments despite the narrow defeat.
