The University of Technology, UTECH, is defending a 233-percent increase in its mandatory student enrollment commitment fees.

The fees have skyrocketed this year, from $15,000 to $50,000.

In a statement today, UTECH says the $50,000 fee is only for returning students.

New students, as well as students supported by the Students’ Loan Bureau, are only required to pay a $20,000 commitment fee.

The University says the fee is not an additional cost, but part of the total tuition.

UTech says it’s also reduced the percentage of tuition and fees that students need to pay before they can sit their first semester exams.

They say that in order to accommodate students with financial constraints, that percentage has been slashed from 80-percent to a minimum of 65-percent.
