Jamaica is being encouraged to improve its competitiveness as a global service provider.
The recommendation is coming from Director General of the World Trade Organization, WTO, Roberto Azevedo.
Mr. Azevedo was responding to concerns about the impact that the removal of preferential tariffs has been having on Caribbean states like Jamaica.
Many Caribbean states have been struggling to cope on the world market, where their traditional exports of sugar and banana, face fierce competition from countries able to produce the same things far cheaper.
The WTO boss says the solution for small countries is to diversify.
Mr. Azevedo says Jamaica is well positioned geographically to take advantage of opportunities for service providers.
