The Government is to procure equipment to detect contraband this fiscal year, as it moves to strengthen the island’s customs control and security.

Two-point-6 billion has been allocated under the Fiscal Administration Modernisation Programme for the project in this year’s budget.

The programme aims to help the Government achieve a sustainable fiscal position.

This is expected to strengthen the Ministry of Finance’s capacity to improve Customs, Inland Tax Collections, manage debt and government payment operations.

There are also plans this fiscal year to install a fire suppression system at New Port East, as well as a new back-up generator, and additional video surveillance equipment.
