Approximately 5,000 cases of children who display behavioural challenges, are received annually by the National Children’s Registry.
That’s according to Minister of Education and Youth, Fayval Williams.
She says children who display behavioural challenges are usually treated by the Child Protection and Family Service Agency, CPFSA.
The minister, who was speaking on Nationwide This Morning, was addressing the government’s move to amend the Child Care and Protection Act to remove the provision which allows a court to declare children “uncontrollable”.
The debate on the proposed amendment is expected to begin next Tuesday.
Minister Williams says the amendment will also allow courts to make an order for therapeutic treatment for children with behavioural issues.
The first such therapeutic centre was opened at the Maxfield Park Children’s Home in St. Andrew on Thursday.
The minister, who attended the opening, says the order for therapeutic treatment will assist the court in making a decision on a child’s psychological well-being.
Meanwhile, Minister Williams says another specialised therapeutic treatment facility for children with behavioral challenges will be opened shortly at the Windsor Home in St. Ann.
