The changing immigration policies in the United States could create more opportunities for Jamaicans who benefit from the government’s overseas employment programme.
So says Labour and Social Security Minister, Pearnel Charles Junior.
On Wednesday, the Trump administration directed US embassies and consulates around the world to postpone immigrant visa interviews while consular officers complete training on new public-charge guidance.
A public-charge determination can make an immigrant visa applicant inadmissible under federal immigration law if officials determine the person is likely to become dependent on certain forms of public assistance after arriving in the US.
The move follows changes to non-immigrant visa applications announced last month.
Under that policy, non-immigrant students, exchange visitors, and media representatives can only stay in the US for a fixed time period with the option to apply for an extension.
Charles Junior says Jamaicans who work overseas have a good track record.
