The 14th stop on the Wanda Diamond League circuit in Zurich on Thursday produced two stunning world records and a series of world leads and national records.
Brazil’s Alison Dos Santos and Masai Russell of the United States starred.
Dos Santos ran 45.80 seconds to shatter the 400 metres hurdles world record, shaving 14hundredths of a second off Karsten Warholm’s previous mark of 45.94 seconds.
Warholm himself was second in the event, well behind Dos Santos in 46.69 seconds.
Russell’s relentless chase of the 100 metres hurdles world record all season, finally paid. She stunned with an eye-popping 12.09 seconds, three hundredths of a second faster than Tobi Amusan 12.12 seconds.
Amusan was behind in second place in a season best 12.13. Jamaica’s Danielle Williams was fourth in 12.56 seconds while Ackera Nugent was fifth in 12.69 seconds.
Tina Clayton was fourth in the women’s 100 metres in 10.98 seconds. Brianna Lyston finished sixth in 11.13 seconds and Jonielle Smith placed seventh in 11.14 seconds.
St. Lucia’s Olympic champion Julien Alfred was adjudged the winner after she and world champion Melissa Jefferson Wooden came to the line together, both time in 10.70 seconds.
The best placed Jamaican at the meet was Olympic bronze medallist Rajindra Campbell who was second in the men’s shot put with 22.22 metres
2019 world champion Tajay Gayle put together a consistent series to land second place in the men’s long jump with 8.43 metres. Countryman Wayne Pinnock was third with a best jump of 8.33 metres. Greece’s Miltiadis Tentuglou won with with a best jump of 8.45 metres.
Rushell Clayton clocked 53.17 seconds for third in the women’s 400 metres hurdles. Lamara Distin took in the women’s high jump with 1.96 metres and Bryan Levell returned from injury to post 20.32 seconds for sixth in the men’s 200 metres.
