President of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association, JTA, LaSonja Harrison is lobbying for the implementation of a national reading campaign, amid concerns about children spending too much time on electronic devices.
She was speaking Tuesday at the monthly meeting of the Rotary Club of Mandeville.
Harrison pointed to Finland, where legislation restricting students’ use of phones and other electronic devices during the school day took effect in August 2025.
The reform was introduced to improve student focus and address declining test scores.
Harrison says the overuse of phones and other devices is becoming a growing problem, with potential implications for children’s learning and development.
