An American Airlines plane which departed from Kingston and had aboard Jamaica’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith, made an emergency landing at Miami International Airport today.

Minister Johnson Smith was en route to Toronto to attend the Canada edition of the Diaspora conference.

Reports emerging out of the United States are that the emergency landing was due to hydraulic problems.

No one was injured.

According to US media, the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue team responded to the runway emergency just before 11:00 this morning.

One tyre was blown out after the plane landed on Runway 9.

American Airlines officials say they believe the plane left Jamaica with a bad tyre.

The American media say the pilot shut off the engine on the left side of the plane after hydraulic fluid leaked onto the runway.

American Airlines officials released a statement after the emergency landing:

The statement says American Airlines flight 2370 from Kingston, Jamaica to Miami, Florida made an emergency landing upon arrival because of damage to a tire.

American Airlines says it pilots landed the Boeing 7-3-7-eight-hundred aircraft safely, and it was towed to the gate.

The airline says the 1-hundred-and-72 passengers and six crew members on board are all okay and deplaned normally.
