Three CARICOM nations; Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, and Grenada, have joined 80 developing countries in a statement at the United Nations calling for the respect of China’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The statement was made during the UN General Assembly’s Third Committee debate on human rights, which addresses social, cultural, and humanitarian issues on Wednesday.
The signatory countries expressed opposition to the politicisation of human rights, double standards, and interference in the internal affairs of states under the guise of human rights concerns.
Political observers say that at the heart of the matter is a statement by developed countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Japan in which they say they have ongoing concerns about serious human rights violations in China.
During the debate, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, dismissed as lies the issues raised by the developed countries.
