Chairman of the Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections, CAFFE, Dr Lloyd Barnett, is protesting the postponement of local government elections.

Dr Barnett agrees with position of president of the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica, Metry Seaga, that the reasons given by the government for the postponement of the polls is unacceptable.

Dr Barnett says the constant postponement of local government elections reflects the lack of importance that we put into local government.

Meanwhile, Dr Lloyd Barnett, says simply entrenching the powers of local government in the constitution by itself will not change how the institution is viewed.

According to Dr Barnett, there would be many difficulties if there was an attempt to have local government elections and their functions entrenched in the constitution.

The CAFFE Chairman says despite local government not being included in the original drafting of the constitution, it has been now been included in recent amendments.

He notes that this has had no positive impact on how local government is viewed and treated.
