Noted criminal defence attorney, Kings Counsel Peter Champagnie, says Chief Justice Brian Sykes is correct to refer to the repealed Firearms Act during his summation of the One Don/Klansman Gang.

Champagnie made the comments while speaking to Nationwide This Morning.

The new Firearms Act came into effect November 1 last year.

Chief Justice Sykes started his summation of the nation’s longest gang trial on Monday saying he’ll be guided by the repealed act as he reaches a verdict on the gun charges laid against the slate of accused gangsters.

According to Champagnie, the new Firearms Act does not allow for people to be charged retroactively or to persons charged under the old legislation.

The senior criminal attorney says the changes and how they should be applied, have been broadly accepted by everyone.
