Finance Minister, Dr Nigel Clarke, is dismissing claims by his Opposition counterpart Mark Golding that the government’s budget will benefit only the rich and will see a few benefits trickling down to the poor.

Mr Golding made the claim during his Budget presentation yesterday. Dr Nigel Clarke says the budget makes a lot of provisions for social spending. He’s describing the Opposition’s criticisms as ‘hype’.

Dr Clarke says the Opposition Spokesman on Finance is out of touch with the aspirations of ordinary Jamaicans.

In a recent media interview, the PNP Caretaker for West Central St James, and UWI Economist, Dr Andre Haughton, raised concerns that the government had not made enough provisions in the budget for public sector workers. But Dr Clarke says the comment was made in ignorance.
