Classes at Campion College are to be dismissed at noon on Wednesday as the school community struggles with the loss of second-form student Rashad Richards.
The school says all co-curricular activities for the day are cancelled, and meetings with parents scheduled for this week are postponed until further notice.
Rashad died on Tuesday after being struck in the head by a goalpost which fell on him. It’s understood that he was swinging on the goalpost as he waited to be picked up from school.
Rashad was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
In a letter to parents, a copy of which was shared with Nationwide News, school principal Lavare Henry says it is an unimaginably difficult time.
He encouraged the school community to draw strength from their faith and from each other.
Dr Henry says the school’s Guidance Department, supported by counsellors from other institutions, will hold special sessions for the students in Rashad’s class, his teachers, members of the rugby team, and other students who were present at the time of the accident.
School counsellors will also be available in the Guidance Department, and the Chaplaincy Team will be present to provide spiritual support and prayers.
Form supervisors and teachers will also be meeting with their classes to provide support.
Meanwhile, board chairman of Campion College, Anton Thompson, says the school community is devastated.
In a statement Tuesday night, he said the school is cooperating fully with the authorities regarding the incident.
