Nationwide News understands that Prime Minister Andrew Holness is currently locked in a meeting with his Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, and other senior government and health officials, to respond to the latest developments in the Covid-19 crisis gripping the country.
The Prime Minister is said to have summoned the leadership of the Ministry of Health to Jamaica House after the country recorded its highest increase in COVID-19 cases in a single day.
The Ministry of Health reported 468 positive cases of the deadly virus yesterday.
All parishes, except St.Thomas and Portland, confirmed double digit increases of the virus yesterday.
Three parishes, Kingston, St. Andrew and St. Catherine recorded 247 new cases. That’s more than half of the 468 new cases.
Those parishes in the south eastern end of the island is the largest concentration of Jamaica’s population of 3-million.
The country’s positivity rate of 31% is generating serious concerns for the authorities.
The meeting comes as several public health facilities are reporting that they are nearing their Covid bed capacity.
Some hospitals in the western end of the island are at 95% capacity.
The Medical Association of Jamaica and the Jamaica Medical Doctor’s Association yesterday warned that doctors across the island were likely to snap from the pressure being placed on the health sector.
