Nationwide News understands that the University of the West Indies Mona Campus has signaled that it will not be renewing fixed or short-term contracts due to the worsening impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The revelation came during a virtual staff meeting today at which the institution also requested full-time employees and those on contract to voluntarily state how much they could afford to give up by way of a salary cut.
The proposed salary cuts for the UWI employees are to take effect in the June to July pay cycle.
Well-placed sources have told our news centre that a form will be circulated along with the end of May pay package.
Employees are then expected to indicate if and how much they are willing to forego.
Senior Management at the University has already agreed to a 15-per cent salary cut that will go towards assisting needy students at the Mona Campus.
Employees have also been given the option of taking early retirement, while those who are qualified for sabbatical leave, have been requested to put their application on hold.
It was also disclosed at the meeting that the University has reduced its expenditure, but it’s still struggling financially since the COVID-19 outbreak as a number of students are yet to pay their tuition fees.
Campus Registrar at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Donovan Stanberry, confirmed that the UWI is looking to contain costs.
But, he also sought to give the assurance that the UWI Mona would not be acting arbitrarily.
Meanwhile, Nationwide News understands that no decision has been made on whether the first semester of the upcoming school year will be done online as originally planned, or to offer a blend of classes online and on campus lectures.
The University is currently undergoing a phased re-opening process with the bookshops already up and running.
Our news centre also understands that UWI Mona Principal, Professor Dale Webber, is hoping to have close to his full staff complement back on campus before the end of July.
This as the university pushes to have a fulsome assessment of its readiness to welcome students ahead of the September start of the new school year.
