Rescuers worked through mud and debris Friday in areas devastated by the catastrophic flash flood along the Himalayan border between Nepal and China.
Nepal police said Friday morning that the country’s death toll had risen to 538. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV says five people died and 558 remain missing.
Foreigners from multiple countries are among the missing, many of them trekkers and pilgrims.
Pakistan and Japan say they are dispatching emergency relief assistance.
Meanwhile, authorities warn that a newly formed, overflowing lake could trigger further flooding.
