Principal Director of the Met Service, Evan Thompson, says desalination is among several options under consideration by the government as the country continues to be gripped by a worsening drought.

Desalination is the act of removing impurities from seawater to produce potable water.

In August, water minister, Matthew Samuda, told the Jamaica Information Service the government was conducting feasibility studies for potential desalination projects in St. Thomas and Clarendon.

According to the minister, the studies are examining whether desalination could provide additional water supplies in selected areas where seawater can be extracted with limited environmental impact.

But he noted that the process would not be undertaken on a national scale due to high cost and potential environmental impacts.
