Local environmentalist, Peter Espeut, says the government would be going back on its word if it allows mining to resume in the Dry Harbour Mountains.

His comments come amid revelations made by Minister with Responsibility for Mining, Audley Shaw that he is minded to grant a mining permit to Bengal Development Limited to carry out mining activities in the area.

Shaw was speaking at the Standing Finance Committee this week.

Espeut says Shaw should provide clarity on the possible areas that will be permitted for mining activities.

Espeut says the government should be held responsible for its mismanagement of the environment.
