Environmentalist, Peter Espeut, is calling on the government to take the next step and implement a deposit compensation scheme for recycling plastic bottles.
His call comes as the stakeholders are getting used to a national ban on styrofoam containers that took effect on January one, and a ban on certain single use plastic bags, in effect since last year.
Mr Espeut says he’s pleased with the initiative.
But he says Jamaica is not a leader in this phenomenon.
Last week, Government Senator, Matthew Samuda, proposed that an Environmental Impact Assessment be done to examine the effectiveness of the ban on certain categories of single-use plastics.
He said the ban has already proven successful.
