Former Barbados Prime Minister Owen Arthur has passed away at age of 70.
Owe who is the island’s longest serving Prime Minister, died at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at about 12:26 this morning.
He was hospitalised last week with heart complications.
In a statement, the government extended sincerest condolences to his widow, Julie, his daughters, Leah and Sabrina and other relatives.
The government says the Minister of Labour and Social Relations and St Peter Member of Parliament Colin Jordan, will be the coordinating minister for the funeral arrangements.
Barbados will also begin three days of national mourning starting today.
The statement says all flags will be flown at half mast.
