The West Indies produced a remarkable batting display, with John Campbell, captain Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo all scoring centuries, but in the end it was all in vain, as India responded with a record-breaking run chase to win the second One-Day International by eight wickets and clinch the three-match series at the ACA Stadium, on Wednesday.
Alrick Swaby tells us more.
The West Indies sent to bat, post their highest-ever total in a one-day international, reaching 405 for 7 from their 50 overs.
Opener Campbell led the charge with 101, Hope made 104, while Jangoo struck 114. It was only the sixth time in ODI history that three batters from the same team had scored centuries in an innings.
The West Indies also surpassed their previous highest ODI total of 389, made against England at St George’s in 2019.
Campbell and Hope laid the foundation with a second-wicket partnership of 110 from just 79 balls. Hope then combined with Jangoo for a massive 182-run third-wicket stand, setting the platform for the West Indies’ record-breaking total.
Hope in the process went past Brian Lara with 20 One Day centuries West Indies.
Gurnoor Brar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets apiece.
If the West Indies’ innings was extraordinary, India’s reply was even more spectacular. Chasing 406 for victory, India reached the target in 43.3 overs to complete their highest successful run chase in ODI history.
Captain Shubman Gill produced a sensational innings, smashing the fastest double century in ODI cricket, reaching the landmark in only 117 balls.
He also recorded the fastest century by an Indian captain and the highest individual score by an Indian batsman in a successful ODI run chase.
Gill received support from Rohit Sharma, who scored 101 as the pair launched India’s pursuit with a breathtaking opening-wicket partnership of 255.
This marks the second time in One Day Internationals that a team was failing to win after scoring 400 or more runs.
The third and final game in the series will be on Saturday.
Meanwhile England all-rounder, Liam Livingstone, says that it’s almost impossible to defeat India in International cricket at the moment.
According to Livingstone, India has an abundance of quality cricketers, he added that there are players currently under the radar awaiting their moment in the spotlight.
