Cabinet has agreed to intervene at the Long Pond and Monymusk sugar factories in an effort to keep them open.

The decision was announced by Information Minister, Ruel Reid at a Post Cabinet press briefing this morning at the office of the Prime Minister.

In March of this year, the government signaled plans to take over operations at the two factories after Pan Caribbean Sugar Company announced it would be closing the Monymusk factory this year.

Minister Reid says both factories have been temporarily handed over to the government through the Sugar Company of Jamaica.
