Health Minister, Dr. Christopher Tufton, has officially confirmed that Jamaica is now in its fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He gave the update during a media briefing this morning.

According to Dr. Tufton, the country has experienced a rising infection rate in recent months.

The Ministry of Health says the Omicron variant of COVID-19 remains the dominant strain in the country.

Its Ba2 subvariant is steadily gaining ground and is projected to eventually become the leading cause of infection.

However, Dr. Tufton says current evidence suggests this wave remains mild in comparison to previous ones as hospitalisations remain low.

However, as infections are also on the rise globally, the Health Minister is reminding the public that vaccination remains the best protection against the virus.
