The Jamaica National Heritage Trust, JNHT, has announced plans for a $12.2 million renovation of Norman Manley’s birthplace in Roxborough, Manchester.

The announcement came from the JNHT’s Executive Director, Leslie Harrow, at a floral tribute on the 133rd anniversary of Manley’s birthday on Saturday.

The restoration will include a rehabilitation of the exhibition space, installation of a water pump, re-roofing, landscaping, upgrading of the restrooms, and the mounting of signage and interpretive storyboards.

The JNHT says the restored site will be reopened next financial year.

Harroow says the work is be pursued through a public-private partnership.

Manley, a National Hero, served as Jamaica’s first and only Premier.

Reflecting on his legacy, Harrow called for a renewal in our responsibility to preserve Jamaica’s heritage, noting that the renovation is an investment in Jamaica’s heritage, education, community pride, cultural tourism and national identity.
